Dear PIs of the Meilahti campus,

We welcome you to suggest top level international or Finnish speakers for the Biomedicum Helsinki Seminar Series.

The goal of the Biomedicum Helsinki Seminar Series is to showcase outstanding scientific research on a weekly basis to the students, post docs and senior scientists of biomedical and clinical sciences of the Meilahti campus.

Seminars take place every Monday at noon and are followed by a student lunch. Webinars can be arranged at other times, e.g. due to time difference. The webinars are also followed by a 30 minutes discussion between students and the speaker. The speaker's ccommodation (Sunday-Tuesday) and travel expenses are reimbursed (read more here).

What needs to be considered when submitting a BMH speaker suggestion

The main criteria for selection as BMH speaker include high profile, general interest, novelty and balance between scientific disciplines. Before submitting a speaker for BMH seminar series, we urge colleagues to first carefully consider whether the suggested speaker stands out as a high profile scientist with recent track record on scientific discovery or would she/he be more suited for special seminar, targeting a specialized scientific audience. Secondly, we recommend reading the instructions below. The decisions will be made on the basis of information provided via webform.

Please send your suggestions including:

1) A short description of the speaker and their research field with a link to an English webpage, if available.

2) Publications

·       - Max 3-5 recent publications representative of the speaker's research and in which the scientist is the first or corresponding author. Only selected publications within the last 5 years are included. List full titles - including names of the authors, title and the year of publication.

·         - List key papers from the speaker’s own laboratory marked as first or senior authorships. In case of other type of papers are listed, please clarify the speaker's role in the study. High impact is important but not sufficient if the speaker’s role in the paper remains unclear.

·         - Please limit the number of reviews, the principle decision will be made on the basis of recently published original studies.

3) Merits of the speaker

·      Please explain why the speaker or her/his recent discovery is interesting for a broad scientific audience. We generally prefer scientific discoveries over technical merits so pay attention in explaining the significance of the discovery. However, if the main emphasis is on technology, please explain what is the significance of the technology beyond specialized field. Since we have and wish to have more students and postdoc listeners, please indicate if the speaker is exceptionally motivational.
