PhD/Postdoctoral positions in RNA repeat toxicity
The Garcia laboratory at the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki is looking for graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows to contribute in deciphering the open questions in the field of RNA repeat toxicity associated with neuromuscular degenerative disorders. RNAs bearing expanded nucleotide repeats are associated with a wide number of neurodegenerative disorders from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to Myotonic Dystrophies (DMs). The laboratory’s goal is to dissect the distinct factors and mechanisms that underlie the processes of cellular degeneration caused by these toxic RNAs. The laboratory combines genetic with biochemical approaches and uses C. elegans models of Myotonic Dystrophy and mammalian systems to address these questions.
We are seeking highly motivated researchers with interest in the neuromuscular degenerative field and in:
- Dissecting the mechanisms of toxicity modulation for genes identified in the lab as novel mediators of toxicity in Myotonic Dystrophy, including the nonsense mediated mRNA decay (NMD) pathway;
- Identifying the full complement of cellular components/pathways that combinatorially regulate the processes of RNA toxicity.
The available projects are funded by a grant from the Academy of Finland and will be discussed in detail during the interview of the selected candidates. The successful candidate will join an international lab with a good, cooperative environment. The Biotechnology Institute is a multidisciplinary research institution with a highly international and collaborative social and scientific environment. It’s situated in the Viikki campus, 25min from downtown Helsinki.
Requirements and position details:
- Candidates should be highly motivated and dedicated to research with strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills - Should have the ability to work independently, organize their workload, and communicate ideas/results
- Fluency in spoken and written English is essential - Experience in RNA biology and in biochemical approaches will be considered an asset - Background in C. elegans research is preferable but not a limiting factor
- These positions are fully funded for 3.5 years; there is also access to graduate/postdoc fellowships for future exploration.

The preferred starting date is October 2017 for postdocs and December 2017/January 2018 for graduate students. The deadline for applications is September 8th and 30th, 2017 for posdoc and graduate student candidates, respectively or until suitable candidates are found.
If you are interested in joining the lab, please submit your application as a single pdf that includes:
- a cover letter describing your research interests (including aspects of the research program that particularly interest you), as well as your research accomplishments
- current CV and list of publications
- contact information of three references (e.g. MSc/PhD thesis supervisors).
