IRISCC onsite training: Stakeholder Engagement in Socioecological Risk Analysis, 24-26 June 2026, Vienna - Austria

Thank you for your interest to participate in the IRISCC onsite training in Stakeholder engagement in Socioecological Risk Analysis, to be held at BOKU University, Vienna (Austria) during 24-26 June 2026.

Information:

This 2.5-day course provides participants with the necessary concepts, tools and collaborative practices to analyse and address socio-ecological risks.

Blending social ecology foundations with hands-on, transdisciplinary methods, the course emphasises meaningful stakeholder engagement to co-produce actionable knowledge and context-sensitive solutions.

Participants begin with an introduction to socioecological research, covering systems thinking, feedback, scale, resilience and society-nature interaction, as well as links between social processes and ecological dynamics.

The course then moves on to transdisciplinary approaches, including stakeholder mapping, boundary spanning, the co-design of research questions and participatory facilitation techniques. A core module on risk analysis will introduce participants to hazard–exposure–vulnerability models, scenario building, and qualitative and quantitative assessment tools and uncertainty management.

Attention will be given to ethics and power dynamics in decision-making. Practical sessions feature real-world case studies and group exercises (e.g. problem framing, pathway mapping and risk prioritisation) to enable participants to apply the methods to their own contexts.

The training concludes with synthesis, reflection and planning for implementation, culminating in the creation of draft engagement and risk assessment plans tailored to participants' projects.

This training is ideal for researchers working at the intersection of the environment, society and governance who are seeking robust, collaborative approaches to socio-ecological risk.
