The Ukrainian Studies Research Community was established to strengthen the existing cooperation at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Helsinki, and to increase academic collaboration with Ukrainian researchers and institutions on Ukrainian Studies.

The activities the research community organizes in 2026-2027 support academic collaboration and strengthen the role of Ukrainian Studies both at the University of Helsinki and more broadly in Finland.

The research community also provides a venue for timely public debate on Ukrainian Studies, Ukrainian agency, Ukraine’s role in Europe, and Ukrainian domestic politics.

The core theme of the research community, Ukrainian Agency, Voice, and Representation in Wartime, seeks to challenge dominant narratives which view Ukraine as a passive object within great power competition and and challenges a familiar pattern in which scholars speak for Ukraine, drawing on Russian-framed secondary accounts rather than Ukrainian perspectives.

The Research Community's funding period is until the end of 2027.
