Proposal for the preliminary examiners of the doctoral thesis - Faculty of Social Sciences

Submission of a dissertation for preliminary examination must be approved by the coordinating academic and the main supervisor. The coordinating academic makes a proposal for the preliminary examiners or examiners of the licentiate thesis after consulting the doctoral candidate and the supervisors. Please refer to the Faculty's specific guidelines.

The doctoral candidate is responsible for the content of the work submitted for the preliminary examination. The supervisor(s) are responsible for ensuring that the quality and scope of the work is such that it can be submitted for pre-examination. The doctoral candidate shall ensure that the language used in the dissertation is up to the standard required for scientific publications. If you have written your dissertation in a language other than your mother tongue, and if your supervisor considers that a language revision is necessary, you may use a language revision on your dissertation manuscript. In most cases, the language revision of the dissertation manuscript is only carried out after the preliminary examination and before the dissertation is printed, but it can also be done before the preliminary examination.

The manuscript must be submitted to the Faculty at least 12 days before the Faculty Council meeting, see Instructions for students -> Dissertation manuscript submission deadlines and Faculty Council schedules.

In addition to this e-form, save as an attachment:
- dissertation manuscript (as a single pdf file, including sub-publications)
- a report on co-authored publications, signed by the doctoral candidate and the supervisor. The supervisor can also confirm the approval by e-mail to valt-postgrad@helsinki.fi. Instructions for writing the report can be found in the Instructions for students.

For more detailed instructions on how to submit your dissertation for the preliminary examination, please see the Instructions for students.

ONCE YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE FORM AND ATTACHED THE ATTACHMENTS, SAVE IT AND SEND A MESSAGE TO: valt-postgrad@helsinki.fi

The doctoral candidate and their coordinating academic will be attached in the message, both of whom will confirm that the proposal has been accepted by replying to the e-mail.
