Application for a National Library Card

You will need a National Library card, if you want to order materials for home or reading room loans from the closed storage of our library or loan works from our open collections.

National Library card can be granted to a person, who:

is over 15 years of age
lives in Finland (P.O. Box, poste restante or foreign addresses are not valid)
has a Finnish personal identification number.

Helsinki University exchange students, company customers, diplomats and interlibrary loan libraries can't order their card with this form.

The first National Library card is free of charge, but ordering a new card to replace a lost or damaged card will cost 5€.

If you need to order material before collecting your card, send your order with email nationallibrary@helsinki.fi. Always mind the material delivery times.

The card can be picked up within three working days / opening days after the ordering. Ordered National Library cards are kept for 3 months.

How to collect your card

The card can be picked up within three working days / opening days after the ordering.
Remember to bring photo ID (driving licence, passport or ID card).
You can also authorise someone else to collect your card on your behalf.
Ordered National Library cards are kept for 3 months.
